Key Ingredients

Your skin is unique. Your skincare should be too. Your formula might be customized with the highest percentage of wrinkle-fighters, or it could include spot-reducers or acne-zappers, if those are among your concerns.

Key ingredients for lines and wrinkles treatment
Arguably dermatologists' favorite retinoid, tretinoin is *the* ingredient of skin rejuvenation. Dozens of studies back up its ability to stimulate new collagen and cell turnover to shrink fine lines and wrinkles, slough off dead skin cells, clear out pores, and resolve acne. As compared to over-the-counter retinol in treating aging skin, studies show tretinoin is 10 to 20 times more effective. (Mic drop.)

A type of vitamin B3 and an antioxidant, niacinamide can minimize blotches and sallowness while reducing inflammation. By increasing the production of skin lipids like fatty acids, it helps shore up skin's barrier.
2% - 4% Concentration Range
It's like a stop sign for melanin, the pigment that causes unwanted marks and blotches. By interfering with melanin production, it creates a glowier, more even-toned surface.
Up to 5% Concentration Range
You might find this anti-inflammatory in your formula if you're looking to combat zits or their red, swollen aftermath. Azelaic acid kills acne-causing bacteria and prompts "anti-keratinizing activity" (translation: it prevents excess keratin from clogging pores). It also inhibits the production of melanin for brightening benefits.
Up to 5% Concentration Range
Strings of amino acids, peptides are well-known (and well-loved) for their skin-renewing abilities. This patented blend has two—palmitoyl tripeptide-1 and palmitoyl tetrapeptide-7—that are known as signal, or messenger, peptides. They tell skin's fibroblasts to pump out more collagen and elastin, helping decrease wrinkle depth. Matrixyl 3000 also contains glycerin, an excellent moisturizer.
2% Concentration
Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a humectant, which means it attracts and draws water into skin. There are two kinds of HA: low molecular weight HA (smaller molecules that penetrate the skin's surface for serious hydration) and high molecular weight HA (these sit on skin's surface for immediate moisture and plumping effects). All Cottonball products contain both types.
0.5% Concentration
Often used in wound healing, this vitamin B5 derivative reduces irritation and, because it's also a humectant, traps water in the skin. Dexpanthenol is a champion of the skin barrier, preventing aggravators from coming in and hydration from seeping out.
Up to 1% Concentration Range
This classic houseplant has superpower anti-inflammatory properties, helping to hydrate and pacify irritated skin. It helps cut the potential sensitivity caused by tretinoin.

To Use

-How to use VX.2 product instructions
  • (01)

In the evening, wash your skin with a gentle cleanser, and dry it. After at least 15 minutes, apply one pump (a pea-size amount) in total to affected areas, avoiding the undereye area.

  • (02)

Start with 2-3 nights per week on non-consecutive nights. If your skin is tolerating the formula well after 2 weeks, increase to 4 nights a week for 1 to 2 weeks, then 5 nights a week for another week, gradually following this pattern until you get to nightly use. If nightly use causes dryness or irritation, stop using the cream for 1 week, and then resume with less frequency.

  • (03)

Follow with a gentle moisturizer to maintain hydration and further support the skin barrier.

  • (04)

Use SPF 30+ daily, as your formula may contain ingredients that increase your skin's sensitivity to the sun.

Have A Question?

Browse our FAQs or ask in the space below.
Which type of skin will get the best results from VX.2?

Skin with fine lines, wrinkles, dark spots, and acne will benefit from VX.2. For skin types that can tolerate it, this formula can be customized with our highest levels of tretinoin, a prescription retinoid that sparks cellular turnover and repair. Our dermatologists can also personalize formulas with a lower concentration for sensitive skin. And if you tell us in the skin quiz that you have hyperpigmentation and/or acne, we'll add in ingredients to treat those too.

When will I start seeing results from VX.2?

Because Cottonball blends the best of Rx with the best of cosmetic ingredients, our formulas are built to have immediate and long-term results. Our blend of hyaluronic acid creates an immediate plumping effect. In a few weeks, other actives will start to kick in with subtle but meaningful anti-aging changes. Your skin may feel smoother and softer. Around three months, you should see noticeable improvement in line-reduction, which will continue to transform the longer you use the product.

How long do I use VX.2?

There's no time limit. To continue achieving benefits and maintain results, it's best to keep using this product.

Is there anyone who shouldn't use VX.2?

If you are pregnant or nursing, you should not use products that contain tretinoin, found in VX.1. Anyone with a known allergy or irritation to any of the ingredients should also avoid VX.1. See more in our safety information.

If I already have a retinol product, can I still use VX.2?

While Cottonball formulas are meant to work with your existing favorite skincare products, you won't need to use a retinol at the same time as VX.2. Retinol is a less-potent, over-the-counter form of a retinoid. VX.2 contains the prescription retinoid tretinoid. Doubling up could be too irritating for skin. When you order any Cottonball treatment, we'll provide clear instructions on how to work in your new and existing products, and our dermatologists are available any time to answer any specific questions about your regimen.

Retinoids have typically irritated my skin in the past. How does yours work for sensitive skin?

Cottonball treatments are 100% personalized for your skin. So if you tell us in the skin quiz that your skin is sensitive or that you've had negative issues with retinoids before, your product will be formulated with a lower level of our prescription retinoid, tretinoin; it will also be infused with dexpanthenol, an irritation-reducing vitamin B5 derivative that is often used in wound healing. Our dermatologists will likely also recommend increasing use of VX.2 very slowly. For example, once weekly for weeks 1-4; twice weekly for weeks 5-8; and potentially three times weekly in weeks 9+.

What do I do if this is too irritating for my skin? I don't want to lose my money.

Thanks to our 100% personalized formulas, we aim to prevent irritation from the start. But if you're not happy with your product, we offer free reformulations. Simply log in to your member account and let us know what's going on with your skin. One of our dermatologists will help refine the blend until it works for you.

Am I getting the azelaic acid even if I don't have acne?

When you take our skin quiz, you'll be able to tell us whether acne is a concern or not. Those who do not have acne-prone skin or a history of acne will not get azelaic acid in their personalized formula.

Can I use at-home red-light therapy with VX.2?

If you're using red light therapy, treat with the red light first, and then apply VX.2 afterwards. Going in the opposite order can make tretinoin, a key ingredient in VX.2, break down and become less effective.

Can this formula help with sagging skin due to GLP-1s or other weight loss?

Tretinoin, the prescription retinoid found in VX.2, has been shown to reduce fine lines and wrinkles. VX.2 also contains matrixyl 3000, a blend of peptides shown to also stimulate collagen production; by doing this, tretinoin plus matrixyl can help tighten skin. However, VX.2 is not meant to reverse the significant sagging skin that occurs with GLP-1-induced weight loss.
